Welcome 👋
I'm Alex Flatter, a software engineer & product thinker located in Hamburg, Germany.

About

As a software engineer, I spend most of my time architecting and writing web applications with some occasional system-level programming sprinkled in.

I've been active in the open-source community in the past and while I've initiated a couple of projects of my own, none of them are still maintained by myself. These days, I'm mostly fixing and improving things in other projects as I stumble upon bugs. Check out my GitHub profile to learn about all the serious and not-so-serious projects.

For those who care, here's the really short summary of my programming background. I started writing code in BASIC as a teenager, quickly switched to building websites in PHP and then discovered Ruby and Rails. Over the years, websites turned into full web applications and to deliver the latest user experience, I've written a lot of JavaScript for browsers and Node.js. I've dabbled with a lot of different tech stacks, played around with .Net, Rust, Clojure, Haskell and more, but recently I've grown to love Elixir and Phoenix as they bring a touch of simplicity to the current state of web development.

All that being said, I'm not writing professional code just for the sake of it. I'll do my best to convince you to not write any code at all, because it will become a liability. Instead, I propose that we will build small experiments (sometimes using No-Code tools) to verify your hypothesis first. The goal behind this approach is to increase the chance for success and still reduce cost now and in the future.

I love to work with NGOs, public sector, social entrepreneurs and health companies. Get in touch and I'll be happy to help.

Now

Inspired by Derek Siver's /now page movement, here's what I a currently spend my time on:

I'm currently working on filling my schedule for 2022 as contractor with clients.Planning our relocation within Hamburg. Looking forward to a lot more space for creative and deep work in the new place.
